Growing herbs in my garden and using them for health and beauty began with my family in 1973. Along the way I studied Herbal Medicine and Aromatherapy, and eventually turned a passion into a business. Woodspirits Ltd., Inc. began life as an herb shop which operated from 1979 until 1992 when the business turned into a wholesale enterprise.
Woodspirits today is still largely wholesale, but it is an international company with a branch in England and manufacturing sites in the U.S. Beginning with beautiful, all natural soaps made from olive and coconut oil, and expanding into salt scrubs and other useful products, we have grown from a small local herb shop to what we are today. We are on the shelves of major health food stores, spas, high-end pharmacies, art galleries, fine gift stores, and gourmet grocery stores such as Whole Foods™.
We have been featured in Mademoiselle, Town and Country, In Style, U.S. News and World Report and many other international magazines. In February of 1995 Martha Stewart Living published a four-page article on our company. In 1997 I founded an international trade association for the handmade soap industry, The Handcrafted Soap Makers Guild. I served as the president of the association for two years. We believe in natural ingredients in our soaps and body care products. These nature-based products can sometimes be hard to "capture". In other words, they do not last as long as we may like when exposed to air.
Store your soap away from strong odors, as the scent may transfer to the soap.
The outer "rind" of the soap will sometimes lose its color or scent over time, but be assured that inside the soap is still fresh. Once the soap is wet, a natural seal of glycerin covers it and protects it from air damage. Just like with fresh herbs, oxygen, light and heat are the processes that affect color and scent in natural products.
We use only coconut and olive oil in our soap base. They are edible. We feel the skin is a permeable organ and therefore the finest "food grade" ingredients should be used in making body care products.
